Mindset and techniques

 - What do you say when you get overwhelmed?​

"I need some space". "I need to go, take a walk".

It's the same way when you have a conversation. In that moment, you can either react, meaning you get defensive, or you can respond.

Responding is a way that says: "I'm trying understand you".

Reaction says: "I have no say in it, you have the cause, this is the effect, and that is no accountability in it".

Responding says: "I'm taking full accountability for my feelings, that only I can touch."

That's the big difference.​

The how personal you take something, is a direct reflection of a how much grace you give to other people.

- We often get carried away when we are talking to others because we are stuck in our heads, right?

And often we're not listening to what others are saying when they're speaking. We are just waiting for our turns to speak. Not sure about you, but I'm definitely guilty of this one.

To stop ourselves from just listening to respond, and try to shift towards listening to understand, I'm going to share you 3 techniques to help you become more present in your everyday conversation.

Communication skills

Ask 3 follow up questions

 

When someone is sharing about their weekend and they seem to be expressing heightened emotions, it's important to pay attention.

For example, if they say it was "okay" but "really stressful, don't just offer sympathy by saying "aww, that sucks" or "Oh, I hope things get better soon",

 Instead, try asking them what's causing stress or if there's more to the story. This approach can help you build a stronger connection with them and show that you genuinely care.

For example:

"- Hey, what's causing you all the stress?

or

"- What's contributed to the stress?"

or

"- Is there more to the story?"

Learn how to listen with your eyes

Whether you're talking or listening, listen to the other person's body language.

People communicate with more than just words, they also communicate what they are thinking and how they're feeling with their body. The body never lies.

Our reactions with our body are a direct response and they're not filtered through conscious thinking. Often, we think that people react to what we are saying after we've finished talking, and their reaction comes in the form of their response. Whereas in reality, people are reacting in the moment as you are talking. They react with their body language first. And learning how to be present in these moments, and aware of their body language is a massive competitive advantage.

Remove any distractions

 

Remove all distractions that rob you of presence.

Before an important communication or an important meeting,

I always put my phone on "Do not disturb", or better,

I turn it completely off.

 

And, then I also think about the environment in which the meeting's going to take place.

If I've got an important meeting,

I don't usually have them anywhere noisy or anywhere where there could be lots of visual distractors.

 

Use this as your superpower moving forward.

Your goal is to make people feel good around you.
  1. Storytelling Power: share funny, unexpected, or slightly dramatic stories that hook people in.
  I once walked into a business meeting thinking it was a costume party. Let's just say, no one else was dressed as a pirate.
  2. Observational Humour: pick up on funny moments in real-time and make light-hearted jokes.
  If someone spills a drink, you could say, Ah, a classic party sacrifice to the floor gods.
  3. Confidence in Teasing (But not mean): playful banter 

  4. Keep informed and you'll be able to charm your way through any situation, whether it's a conference room or a work party.

  5. If you want to be the life of the party and the boardroom, your conversations need to be a mix of charisma, intelligence, and humour.

  6. You want to be seen as engaging, knowledgeable, and magnetic, but also someone who can read the room and adapt to different vibes.
